Volunteer with DBAN

DBAN will actively engage the Daily Bruin alumni to serve as a robust community for all former staff members, in support of each other, the student-staffers and The Bruin. We are providing scholarship, mentorship and professional development programs for aspiring student-journalists at UCLA, ensuring the excellence and longevity of The Bruin.

GET INVOLVED! Take a look at these opportunities and get in touch:

THE DBAN ALUMNI REUNION & NETWORKING: With the UCLA Alumni Association and the Daily Bruin staff, plan and host the annual DBAN reunion and scholarship dinner at UCLA each fall. Develop daytime panels and workshops for students and alumni. Recruit corporate partners and sponsors to subsidize and scale up the DBAN Reunion. Recruit and retain alumni speakers and presenters. Consider nominations for and select the DBAN Distinguished Alumni Award honoree. In the Winter and Spring quarters, connect alumni with each other and foster an alumni culture through regional meet-up events in and outside of Los Angeles.

ALUMNI MENTORING/PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: Each academic year, (a) offer a mentoring program for current Daily Bruin staff members, (b) develop and facilitate at least four professional-development workshops for student-staffers, (c) provide periodic professional critiques of Daily Bruin productions, both print and online, and (d) host informal career-prep sessions with students and young alumni. The long-term focus of this program, through collaboration with the Membership & Social Media groups, is to connect student staffers with alumni for professional-development opportunities (e.g., writing/editing and overall career guidance; development of resumes, cover letters, and job-interview skills; obtaining informational interviews and leads on employment opportunities; and other activities that support students’ transition from working on the Daily Bruin into putting skills developed at the publication to work in a variety of settings).

MEMBERSHIP & SOCIAL MEDIA: There are over 2,000+ UCLA alumni with known ties to the Daily Bruin, but we barely know each other and the power of our own network.  With the advent of social media, it’s never been easier to bring the DB diaspora together.  Help run one of our DBAN social media platforms — we’re on them all!  Write for or help edit the DBAN Newsletter each quarter to keep DB alumni connected and informed.  Help develop our alumni directory.  With better understanding of our own alumni base, work with our Alumni Mentoring committee to connect students to alumni in various professions.

DAILY BRUIN SCHOLARSHIP: Help raise $10,000 each year for the Daily Bruin Alumni Scholarship for students pursuing careers in journalism at The Bruin (five merit scholarships of $2000 each). Work on our Spark crowdfunding platform, donor honor rolls, email campaigns, alumni testimonials, donation match challenges, and social media campaign on all platforms with the Daily Bruin outreach and social media staff. Cultivate donors and generate leads for possible contributions. With our partners at the UCLA Development Office and Student Support Initiative Office, study and develop a long-term DBAN alumni scholarship and support endowments.
