Dr. Brittany Yee ’08

Dr. Brittany Yee ’08

Bachelor of Science, Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics

Dermatologist, Kaiser Permanente

Student mentee Kelly Kaon, second-year human biology and society major, shared, “Dr. Brittany Yee is the sweetest, most compassionate mentor! She has given me the confidence to start my own dermatology club at UCLA and pursue my passion for dermatology and skincare. When we have our bi-weekly coffee chats, time always flies and I'm always so inspired by her poise, determination, and ambition that she applies to all facets of life. […]

“I love how Dr. Yee and I can talk about professional development, but also personal development including what we find fulfilling in life, what motivates us, and how to celebrate small successes as we work towards accomplishing our milestone goals. Thank you Dr. Yee for being one of the highlights of my UCLA experience.”

David Gutierrez ’15

David Gutierrez ’15

Bachelor of Arts, History

Judicial Law Clerk, United States Courts

Student mentee Aviv Assayag, fourth-year political science major, shared, “David has been an enormous help and has truly gone above and beyond for me. We have virtually met several times, and he has provided extremely in-depth advice about law school admissions, the LSAT, law school, the hiring process, federal clerkships and much more. He also enthusiastically agreed to speak to dozens of my fellow pre-law club members, and did so — answering many of their questions as well. In doing all the aforementioned, David generously volunteered several hours of his valuable time. If there's anyone that deserves this award, it is definitely David!”

Stacy Low ’06, M.S.W. ’10

Stacy Low ’06, M.S.W. ’10

Bachelor of Arts, Women’s Studies and Sociology
Master of Social Welfare

Clinical Counselor, Tri-City SELPA

Student mentee Dolce Vita Martin-Moreno, third year psychology major, shared, “Stacy has gone above and beyond in helping me this past year. She has continued to check in on me and support me with literally whatever it is that I may need. During this past year I had the unfortunate experience of losing my grandmother and Stacy was an amazing support during that process. I have been so lucky to have met her. She has not only been a mentor regarding academics and career opportunities, but has also become a life mentor as well. […]

“She does an amazing job following up with me on my life outside of academics, creating an environment where I feel comfortable to speak with her about almost anything. She gives the best advice, and anytime I achieve something (i.e. secure a research internship, get an A in a class, or finish an important task), I get excited to share the good news with her. She has been extremely patient and always wants to find ways to help and support me wherever I may need it. Stacy is truly amazing and I hope that our mentor-mentee relationship continues beyond this program.”

Aviv Assayag

Aviv Assayag

Fourth-Year Political Science Major

Alumni mentor David Gutierrez ’15 shared, “Aviv is the perfect example of a successful UCLA undergraduate mentee. He was passionate and enthusiastic about his chosen career goals, he was direct in what he desired from the mentorship, he was proactive in reaching out regularly throughout the year, he asked thoughtful, discerning questions about the legal profession and how to get into law school, and he was service-oriented in that he wanted to share the advice and assistance I gave him to so many other students like him. […]

“There are many specific instances of these traits in action during my interactions with Aviv, two of which are highly illustrative of his excellence as both an undergraduate mentee and a UCLA Bruin. The first was with respect to being in touch and in contact with me throughout the year and the clarity of his expectations and goals from the mentorship. As a first-time mentor, I highly desired to be of value to someone who was enthusiastic about their career goals and who had a need for the type of advice I can give. I have been practicing law for four years, three of which as a judicial law clerk, a special position that even 1Ls in law school just starting out have only the faintest idea about. As an undergraduate, I was surprised and happy to hear that Aviv, at this stage in his career, was interested in learning more about being a judicial law clerk, and the highly competitive path one must usually take in order to land the job. Along with his passionate desire to enter a top law school and to reach the pinnacle of the legal profession, I was highly impressed by his knowledge of what he wanted to achieve while in law school and he provided me with an opportunity to hopefully influence and mold his path to becoming an attorney through my advice.

“On that point, he was religious in reaching out, which I highly valued throughout the mentorship. I wanted my mentees to reach out to me through emails, texting or calling, and his interest in developing a connection and relationship with me as a mentor was so refreshing to see, especially as an alum doing mentorship for the first time. I believe we have genuinely developed a professional connection that will last even after this mentorship year.

“All in all, Aviv is the perfect mentee because he is a great human being and leader. Not only does he know what he wants, he is willing to share his knowledge and connections with others to help everyone. I know that he will someday be an outstanding UCLA mentor because, in words and in practice, he passes good deeds on to those who need them. It is a pleasure to be his mentor.”

Mason Lehman

Mason Lehman

Second-Year Environmental Science Major

Alumni mentor Julia Lippe-Klein, M.U.P. ’14, shared, “It has been a true gift to connect with Mason. Mason is one of the most deeply thoughtful, caring, inquisitive and open people in this world. Every time we meet they dive right in with strategically crafted questions to lay the groundwork for deeply meaningful, raw, vulnerable, fun and important dialogue around identity, career pathways, balance, community care, justice, what it means to be safe when we enter spaces as our full selves, how to navigate harm and how to dive into joy. […]

“Mason’s carefully prepared questions, and clear investment in this mentorship process, have allowed us to dive into challenging and essential discussions and strategies, demonstrating the endless value of these relationships. This process, and how Mason shows up, demonstrates the connective tissue required, especially for those of us with marginalized identities, to navigate narrow and harmful systems and structures. The relationships we build and tend to in order to support one another are so important.

“Mason has gone above and beyond by truly challenging me, holding me accountable, by demonstrating how to identify boundaries and capacity, and respond actively and intentionally. When they reprioritized their overflowing plate, I mirrored their strategy to rebalance my own.

“Mason has inspired me to show up with more care and bravery for myself and in my career. I’m resetting how to lay the most inclusive, safe and brave pathways. These powerful lessons reach beyond us, as gifts for everyone around each of us.”

Daniel Skerrett

Daniel Skerrett

Fourth-Year Business Economics Major

Alumni mentor Marc Andres ’82 shared, “Daniel has been an amazing mentee. I have mentored not only a number of UCLA undergraduate students over the years but also college students from other universities. Never before have I had the pleasure of working with a mentee who understood the value of a mentor as Daniel has. Daniel continues to keep me involved with his decision making, whether it be with his coursework, internships or other critical decision making he has had to make over the past two years. […]

“During these difficult COVID years, Daniel continued to pursue not only me but my son Louis who is completing his MBA at Anderson, as well as Louis' classmates, who have been able to provide additional guidance to Daniel that I cannot provide. Daniel will be extremely successful upon his graduation this June. We will continue to have a relationship going forward for many, many years to come. Thank you for providing this excellent program to undergraduates like Daniel. Both Daniel and I have learned a lot from this relationship.”

Dani de Jesus ’00

Dani de Jesus ’00

Bachelor of Arts, Psychology and Political Science

Producer, Alejandro Films

Student mentee Tim Herd, doctor of philosophy in education candidate, shared, “Dani has been an exceptional mentor, always bringing a positive attitude and bright smile to every conversation. She has been encouraging since our first interaction, and I am grateful to know her. Moving across the country (from Michigan to California) alone to pursue my Ph.D., Dani has been an exceptional person in assisting me to feel more comfortable and connected with all the exciting things that Los Angeles has to offer. […]

“Dani has provided me with the opportunity to get involved with a documentary project, where I served as a production assistant. Although I am pursuing my Ph.D. in higher education, this opportunity peaked my interest as I plan to engage in the field of entertainment even more upon the completion of my program. She sent me a copy of “The Five Minute Journal,” as I informed her of my previous journaling strategies. This has helped me focus even more on areas of self-care in a busy first year of doctoral studies. She would also have check-in calls where she would offer insight and feedback about the work that I was doing at the time.”
