Claude Bernard, assistant professor in physics, received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College summa cum laude and Ph.D. from Harvard University. Bernard came to UCLA in 1978 following two years as a research assistant at Columbia University. Currently on sabbatical at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, his main area of research is theoretical elementary particle physics; he is the author of many publications on related research topics.

Bernard is praised for his ability to explain elementary physical concepts to freshmen and complex theory to graduate level students with equal facility. Hid enthusiasm, patience and caring spirit are appreciated by the “undergraduate struggling to pass and the graduate student emerging as a peer.”

A member of Sigma Xi, Bernard is a 1980 Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow.
